Yellow Jackets dominant in victory

North Augusta 41, Aiken 7

NORTH AUGUSTA — After North Augusta coasted to a 41-7 victory against visiting Aiken on Friday night, Dan Pippin pointed out two numbers – 0 and 50 – as milestones for this year’s seniors.

The zero stood for the number of Aiken County teams – and teams in the Augusta area – that have defeated the Yellow Jackets’ seniors during their career.

While he noted the importance of the achievement, Pippin said he believes the other figure means the most in terms of how far the North Augusta program has come.

“I think even a bigger deal is that this was the 50th win in five years,” he said. “That’s a huge accomplishment for anybody.”

From the start Friday, the Yellow Jackets (8-2, 4-0 Region 5-AAAA) were primed for their fourth consecutive win over the Hornets (2-8, 0-4 Region 5-AAAA).

Sophomore quarterback Trib Reece put North Augusta on the board less than a minute in, when he found Dre Dunbar on a 29-yard touchdown strike.

Then, the Yellow Jackets broke out the Wildcat formation to set up a second score.

In that offensive set, Trey Morgan takes the snap and either hands off to DeVonte Pressley or takes it himself. On third-and-goal from the 3, Morgan called his own number and easily squirted into the end zone for a 14-0 lead.

Late in the quarter, Morgan scored on a 9-yard run.

The quarter closed with Derek McClendon recovering a Hornets fumble and returning it 40 yards to the Aiken 7. Pressley scored on the first play of the second quarter for a 28-0 advantage.

Pressley finished with 107 yards on 17 carries.

North Augusta scored once more before the half, as Reece bulled in from
1 yard out.

Devin Grimes opened the second-half scoring with a 72-yard punt return for North Augusta.

Aiken ruined the shutout bid on its final drive.

Gabe Green scored on a 6-yard run with 15 seconds to go.

The win helped North Augusta remain perfect in region play heading into next week’s showdown with Dutch Fork, which is ranked in the top 10 in the state.

PLAY OF THE GAME: North Augusta quarterback Trib Reece set the tone less than a minute into the contest with a 29-yard completion to Dre Dunbar for the game’s first score, helping the Yellow Jackets to a 21-0 first-quarter lead.

STAR OF THE GAME: Reece was 9 for 16 through the air for 193 yards and a TD. He also ran for a score.

WHY NORTH AUGUSTA WON: The Yellow Jackets took advantage of an explosive offensive attack as well as Hornets miscues.

WHY AIKEN LOST: The offense failed to move the ball until the team’s final drive of the contest.

NEXT: North Augusta at Dutch Fork, 7:30 Friday; Aiken vs. South Aiken, Friday.
