Laney can't recover from early turnovers

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Laney fumbled three times in the first half, with two leading to Carver touchdowns as the Tigers cruised past the Wildcats 35-12 on Friday in the second round of the Class AA playoffs.

Carver running back Marquez Holloway did most of the work for the Tigers, scoring twice.

“They were a good team,” Carver coach Dell McGee said. “They were tough. The more you win the tougher games get.”

The Tigers advance to the quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive season. They will face Fitzgerald, which beat Adairsville 46-13. Home field will be decided today by a coin toss.

Carver’s first score came on Laney’s third possession. Laney quarterback Leo Myers fumbled on his own 24-yard-line, and Carver’s Brandon Watt returned it 24 yards to put the Tigers ahead 6-0 after the point-after attempt failed.

Laney fumbled on its next possession, but two Carver penalties forced a Tiger punt.

The Wildcats scored on their next possession, a 42-yard drive that ended with a Tharius Pryor touchdown catch from 6 yards out.

Carver went ahead for good when Holloway broke free for a 47-yard touchdown. Cequanti Ford ran in the two-point conversion.

The Tigers benefited from another Wildcat fumble on their next possession with another Holloway touchdown run, this one for 40 yards, with 10.1 seconds left in the half.

Holloway finished with 182 rushing yards on 21 carries.

The Carver defense held Laney to just seven first downs. Three of those came in the final few minutes of the game as the Wildcats took to the air.

“We played hard, but we still made a lot of mistakes,” said McGee, whose team had nine penalties.
