Quinnlyn Diehl named girls lacrosse player of the year

Lakeside's Quinnlyn Diehl had a career-high 40 goals this season as Lakeside went 11-4 and made the state playoffs.

In her freshman year of high school, after nine years of competing in gymnastics, Quinnlyn Diehl decided it was time to move on to something else.

The Lakeside High School girls lacrosse team is glad she did.

A starter for the Lady Panthers for four years, Diehl scored a career-high 40 goals in 2014. She helped lead the team to its best season as it finished 11-4, advancing to the first round of the state playoffs and was named The Augusta Chronicle’s Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year.

“That’s pretty cool, I’m happy about it,” Diehl said. “It makes me proud because I worked hard this year.”

In her time at Lakeside, the Lady Panthers never had a losing season and went a combined 35-19-2.

“Freshman year we didn’t know too much about it, we weren’t very comfortable,” Diehl said. “We did a lot of running our first couple of years and it was awful. Our stick skills weren’t very good either, but a lot of us go to summer camps and we practice over the summer and go to fall ball which also helps us. You can definitely tell this year, we have great communication skills, better ball skills and we’re all a lot faster, too. Definitely just sticking with it is a big part in lacrosse because it is mentally draining and physically tiring.”

Lakeside coach Courtney Hatcher thought it was the effort she put into the game that set her apart.

“Quinnlyn is a natural athlete,” Hatcher said. “She is fast on the field with excellent stick skills and quick to pick up loose balls. But it’s the way she always works hard to improve herself and her game that sets her apart. She is a true team player and I’m so proud that she has been named player of the year.”

She might have played varsity lacrosse for the final time. She’ll be heading to Georgia Southern which doesn’t have a lacrosse team but might try out for the school’s club team.
