Lakeside's Edwards grabs weekly honor

Panthers' Jonathan Edwards is the player of the week as he had 3 touchdowns last week in Lakeside's 39-9 win over Westside.

Jonathan Edwards isn’t used to scoring return touchdowns. Then again, with other explosive teammates around him, he’s not the one to always receive kicks.

But against Westside, the senior returned a kick more than 70 yards for a score. He also had 102 receiving yards with two touchdowns as the Panthers beat the Patriots 39-9. Edwards’ big plays — he scored all three of his touchdowns in the first half — mean he’s the Player of the Week.

“The hole just opened up,” Edwards said about the special teams touchdown. “I’ve never really gotten a kick-off return – usually it’s B.J. [Raymond] because he’s deep. But when it opened up, I just saw it and went through.”

When Edwards was lined up as a receiver, Westside didn’t have much success stopping the big plays. Edwards needed only four catches to break the 100-yard mark, as the three-year starter had a good connection with quarterback Hunter Banks on deep throws.

“He’s just an explosive athlete,” Lakeside coach Jarrett Troxler said. “He gives you a chance to score every time he touches the ball. That’s the biggest thing for us.”
