Lakeside's Tanner Brassell selected player of the week

From cornerback to quarterback, Brassell has had an interesting few weeks.

Formerly a defensive back, he has been given signal-caller duties and has flourished, leading Lakeside to late scores the past two games.

Against Houston County last Friday, Brassell and Josh Jones connected for a long pass to set up a field goal with less than a minute to play for a 37-35 win.

But Brassell, who was previously a quarterback on the JV team as a freshman and sophomore, was more than solid before that big play, as he threw for more than 300 yards and had four touchdowns to win The Augusta Chronicle’s Player of the Week honors.

“I’m just glad I could finish it out and get a win. It was a good offensive performance,” he said. “I had confidence I could pull out a win. It’s just staying comfortable and staying relaxed.”

Asked to take over as starting QB, in part due to injuries, Brassell has directed an attack that has helped Lakeside outlast both Grovetown and Houston County.

The wins have improved it to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the region.

“I think it’s his will to compete – he’s a real tough competitor,” Lakeside coach Jarrett Troxler said. “He wants to win at everything. If you play him in ping pong, he will want to beat you. He wants to be good. I knew he had it in him; I just didn’t know he had 15 for 18, 325 yards and four touchdowns.”
