Midland Valley sweeps Lakeside in basketball

The Lakeside girls and boys basketball games were almost a carbon copy Tuesday night.

The home-openers for both squads ended in defeat with the girls falling to Midland Valley 51-49 in overtime, while the boys lost to the Mustangs by the same score in a game that went down to the final buzzer.

Both Lakeside teams had sizable leads disappear in the early going, saw tenuous leads evaporate late and missed opportunities that could have been game-changers.

The Lady Panthers led 41-40, but the Lady Mustangs’ Alexis Bates, who scored a game-high 25 points, hit a free throw with eight seconds in regulation left to tie it. Lakeside (0-2) missed two free throws, got a turnover and missed a game-winning shot at the buzzer.

In overtime, the Lady Panthers fell behind quickly by five, but clawed their way back and took a 49-48 lead on a three-point-play by Savannah Mydel (10 points). Midland Valley’s Christen Dunbar banked in a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession with 28 seconds for the final margin of victory.

The Lady Panthers, playing without its starting backcourt of Bria Baker and Tristan Real because of injuries, were lead by senior center Rosalyn Talley, who scored a team-high 18 points before fouling out with 4:17 to play in regulation.

Lakeside held a 40-34 lead at that point.

“In the fourth quarter we put a good run together and played good ball,” said Lady Panthers head coach Drew Shelton. “If we take care of the ball, they can’t come back.”

The Panthers (0-2) looked like they might run away with it early, leading 25-13 midway through the second period, but the Mustangs (3-2) tied it at 40 heading into the fourth period.

Trading leads, Lakeside went ahead 49-47 with 3:30 to play. Midland Valley’s Daniel Carr, who scored a game-high 16 points, tied the game with 50 seconds left on a banker, then stole the ball and cruised in for the game-winning layup with 30 seconds remaining.

Following a missed Carr free throw with six seconds left, the Panthers could not get a shot off.
