Laney doesn't get break in region race

Laney High School defeated T.W. Josey High School 54-0 on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012.

Laney didn’t get the break it wanted, but the Wildcats did their part Friday night.

After losing to Screven County by a point earlier this season, Laney needed East Laurens to beat the Gamecocks to boost its hopes of getting a No. 1 seed.

But Screven County won, 15-14, and would clinch the region 3-AA crown with a win against Josey, the same team Laney routed 54-0 this week.

“We were trying to take the emotional part out of the game and just focus in on football,” Wildcats coach Lemuel Lackey said. “We felt the emotions were going to be high at the beginning of the game, but at some point, that whistle’s going to blow, and we want to be ready to play football. That was our goal.”

COMEBACK: Though Silver Bluff already locked up the region title a week earlier, the Bulldogs looked to extend their winning streak to five games against Barnwell.

That streak appeared in jeopardy with Silver Bluff trailing 21-0 at intermission.

At halftime, Al Lown remembered back to the game against Bamberg-Ehrhardt earlier in the season. Silver Bluff led that contest 28-6 at intermission, eventually lost the lead and staged a late rally for the win.

This time, thanks to a fumble and a bad snap on a punt in the final four minutes, the Bulldogs scored a pair of late touchdowns and went on to win.

“We had to have some help,” Lown said. “But we made some plays.”

ROAD WARRIORS: Thomson started its season by quieting the usually potent Burke County offense in Waynesboro. This week, it kept Washington County in check.

In a game that featured two undefeated teams, the Bulldogs allowed only 14 points in Sandersville. Before the game, the Golden Hawks were averaging 45.5 points per game.
