Peach County holds off Jefferson County for first-round victory

Peach County 35, Jefferson County 21

FORT VALLEY, Ga. — Peach County held off a stubborn Jefferson County team Friday night, pulling away for a 35-21 win in the first round of the GHSA Class AAA playoffs.

Quarterback Greg Williams threw for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and Daniel Walton scored on a blocked punt and came up with a late interception to key the win.

“I thought we came out good, and we looked like we were ready to play,” Peach County head coach Chad Campbell said. “We had a little lull, and they took advantage of it and did a great job getting back into the football game, but we were able to survive and move on. That’s really the most important thing at this time of the year.”

Peach County scored on its first play from scrimmage. After a 46-yard punt return from Demarcus Robinson, Williams found Saire Davis for 26 yards and a score. The Trojans added another score in the second quarter on a 3-yard run by Donnovan Howard, and it looked as if they would cruise into the next round. But Jefferson County drove right back down the field, scoring on a 8-yard pass from David Wright to Terry Lattimore to cut the Peach County lead to seven.

After a Peach County fumble, Jefferson County scored again, this time on a Nigel Mathis touchdown run.

“We went in and made a few defensive adjustments that paid off in the second half,” Campbell said. “We knew that we were playing a good football team, and we talked about the importance of coming out and moving the football.”

That’s exactly what the Trojans did as it took them only eight plays to go 61 yards with Howard scoring from 2 yards out. Jefferson County scored one more time, but the Trojans’ defense forced two second-half turnovers and gave up only 13 yards rushing in the second half. When Tyler Gibson blocked a punt in early in the fourth quarter and Walton picked it up and scored, Peach County had stretched its lead to 14 points.
