Player of the Week: Tiffani Harrison

Tiffani Harrison wrapped up Hephzibah’s regular season by pouring in a career-high 37 points Tuesday night in a win at Glenn Hills. In the moments before the tip off of what turned out to be her best high school game ever, the senior scorer had her doubts.

“It wasn’t like any other day and any other game,” she said. “We didn’t have our uniforms. They weren’t washed.”

So Harrison and her Lady Rebel teammates wore a mixture of boys and girls junior varsity gear. The black jerseys were new to the team, and the feel wasn’t right for Hephzibah’s top scorer.

“It felt really weird,” she said. “The shorts were too small, and when I was warming up I wasn’t hitting anything. I thought it was going to be a bad night.”

Hephzibah head coach Wendell Lofton didn’t lower his expectations. He said his top scorer, who also has a spot on the school’s All-A honor roll, has learned to overcome obstacles in her path.

“She’s our leading scorer, and probably one of the top 10 scorers in the area,” he said. “We’ve known from last year and the year before that – ever since ninth grade – we’ve known she was going to be our leading scorer.”

Harrison once again didn’t disappoint. Her 37 points, including three 3-pointers, were crucial in a 69-66 victory over the Lady Spartans that wrapped up Hephzibah’s regular season at 14-6 overall.

The Lady Rebels will enter next week’s Region 3-AAA Tournament as the South subregion’s No. 3 seed. Hephzibah will need a first-round win over sixth-seeded Harlem on Tuesday night and a second-round victory over third-seeded Thomson on Thursday afternoon to secure a spot in the Class AAA state playoffs.

Two region tournament wins would also most likely produce a semifinals showdown with undefeated and top-seeded Washington County, which is exactly what Harrison said she wanted.

“I want that win so bad,” she said. “I feel like we can beat them. We stuck with them the first time at their house, but I got in foul trouble. We want to play them again.”
