NORTH AUGUSTA — For the first time this season, North Augusta didn’t have a lead after the first quarter. But that didn’t stop the Yellow Jackets from changing the game’s course one quarter later.
North Augusta combined for seven touchdowns in the second and third quarters to rout Grovetown 56-13 on Friday night.
North Augusta (4-0) quarterback Trib Reece hooked up with receiver Keyon West 10 times for 107 yards, all coming in the first half. Reece totaled 204 passing yards and one touchdown while going 15 for 19.
“(West) was just there and I hit him most plays,” Reece said. “All credit to the offensive line and defense for playing exceptional, and (Willie McCloud) came up huge.”
Reece’s yards through the air set up six rushing touchdowns for North Augusta, including four for McCloud. The Yellow Jackets collected 207 rushing yards.
After the Yellow Jackets scored early in the first, Grovetown (1-2) shocked North Augusta on a 44-yard run by Linward Jackson that set up a touchdown run by Justin Dears, tying the game at 7 after the first quarter.
North Augusta responded with three touchdowns in the second quarter, all on the ground, and busted it open with four more in the third quarter. Safety DJ Young recorded a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown midway through the third.
“That was the first touchdown the first team had given up,” coach Dan Pippin said. “They took it personally. We told them to relax, and they didn’t lose composure. In a situation like that, it’s important.”
McCloud totaled 123 rushing yards, while Dashawn Barnes added 75 for North Augusta, which has averaged 47 points per game in its first four contests. The Yellow Jackets bested their score against Grovetown last year when they won 42-7.
Jackson had 70 yards rushing on nine carries for Grovetown, while Shiyear Woodburry added 56. The Warriors completed just one pass as Desmond Sampson took over for Dears halfway through the game.
