Greenbrier moves on in region, qualifies for state

Greenbrier 11-9, Warner Robins 3-3

Greenbrier took the first step to get back to the state championship series on Thursday night.

The Wolfpack entered the Region 2-AAAAA tournament as a No. 1 seed facing No. 4 Warner Robins and swept the Demons, making it to the second round of the region and qualifying for the state playoffs.

If the Wolfpack (16-4) had any jitters they didn’t show them as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings in Game 1 of the twin-bill, winning 11-3.

“Clint (Hardy) kind of set the tone, first pitch of the game he hits up the middle, that was a big boost for us for sure, said Wolfpack coach Chris Wilkins.

Greenbrier scored twice in the second inning of Game 2 and never trailed en route to a 9-3 victory.

Hardy (5-0) gave up three runs in the fifth inning to the Demons, but otherwise cruised through his six-inning stint, allowing the three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.

Left-handed first baseman Adam Sasser provided the major offensive firepower for the Wolfpack as he drove in six runs on two hits, including a fourth inning opposite-field grand slam that gave the Wolfpack a 9-0 cushion.

Austin Robinson (6-1) got the win in the nightcap, scattering seven hits while striking out seven.

The Wolfpack will play host to Lakeside at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Panthers advanced to the semifinals with a 5-0, 6-2 sweep of Northside Warner Robins.
