Lady Vikings sink Lady Wolfpack's state title hopes

Playing host to its first Elite 8 volleyball match in the Georgia High School Association state tournament on Saturday night, things seemed to be in line for Greenbrier to move on to the Final Four.

The Lady Wolfpack won the first game with relative ease. That seemed to wake up Lakeside-DeKalb, which went on to a 3-2 victory (13-25, 25-19, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11).

The match was a weird one that featured re-plays, a rare yellow card handed out to a Lady Viking and a 19-minute delay when a Lakeside-Dekalb rotation error was debated.

As good as the Lady Wolfpack looked in the first game, the same could be said of the Lady Vikings in the next two games.

“They made adjustments and that’s what I told them, I knew it was coming,” Greenbrier head coach Debbie Born said. “We just couldn’t handle it, but then we did force a Game 5 and then No. 12 (Jenny Rose Miller) took over from there.”

The Lady Wolfpack trailed 11-10 in the fifth game when Miller recorded consecutive kills, beating blockers each time. After a Lady Viking ace, Miller got another kill for the final point.

In the third game, Greenbrier trailed 24-15 when it made a run. A DeJhana Cotton ace, two Kenzie Schwartz kills, a Gabbi Meyering kill and a Lakeside-DeKalb error brought the Lady Wolfpack within 24-21. The teams were in a long rally, the Lady Wolfpack were whistled for a net error and when it was determined to be the incorrect call there was a re-play. The Lady Wolfpack served it into the net and the Lady Vikings took the game.

Cotton tied Jen Purucker for the team lead in aces with four, Meyering had 13 kills, Sarah Sather had 18 digs and Hayley Hughes added 37 assists.

The loss ended the season for Greenbrier (38-2).

“This was one awesome year,” Born said.
