Greenbrier's state volleyball run continues with victory over Hiram Lady Hornets

For the second consecutive match, Greenbrier found itself down in a game 23-19.

And for the second consecutive match, the Lady Wolfpack found a way to come back and win the game – and match – to advance to the next round of the Class AAAAA State Volleyball Tournament.

After winning the first game 25-18, the Lady Wolfpack scored the last six points of the second game, which they won 25-23, then cruised to a 25-13 win in the third game to cap a sweep of Hiram on Tuesday night.

The Lady Wolfpack improved to 38-1 and moved on to the state quarterfinals. They will play Saturday, but won’t know where until a re-seeding of the remaining teams occurs tonight.

The Lady Hornets (31-10) took an 8-7 lead in the second game and kept going until it was 23-19.

Then the Lady Wolfpack surged.

A Lady Hornets hitting error took DeJhana Cotton off the front line and back to serve, where she responded with an ace, cutting the lead to 23-21. A setting error by Hiram allowed libero Sarah Sather to replace Cotton. Gabbi Meyering’s block tied the game. Another hitting error gave Greenbrier the lead and senior setter Hayley Hughes ended it by crossing up the Lady Hornets by setting the ball over the net for the winning point.

“We’ve been down by way more than four before and we just knew how to handle it,” Sather said.

After losing the late lead, Hiram came out flat in the final game and Greenbrier quickly went up 14-4.

At the late stage of the season, the Lady Wolfpack have a few nagging injuries, but banded together for the win. The postgame celebration was a bit muted, however.

“We were still excited, it was just we knew we could play better,” Sather said.
