Greenbrier softball heads to state's Elite Eight

Greenbrier 3-8, Ola 2-6

It wasn’t always pretty, but the Greenbrier Lady Wolfpack made plays when they had to Wednesday night and are moving on to the Elite 8 of the Class AAAAA state playoffs.

Facing a tough Ola squad, the Lady Wolfpack jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Game 1, holding on for the 3-2 win.

In the nightcap, the Lady Wolfpack led 8-0, then thwarted the Lady Mustangs’ (20-9-2) comeback, winning 8-6.

The Lady Wolfpack (29-6) travel to a neutral site in Columbus, Ga. on Oct. 25.

“Tonight we found a way to win,” said coach Garrett Black, whose squad committed nine errors in the doubleheader. “Taylor Dupree made two plays tonight that saved us.”

Dupree, Greenbrier’s shortstop and the Region 2-AAAAA Player of the Year, made diving stops of balls up the middle in the sixth inning of both games, recording unassisted forceouts to kill rallies.

“They’re a great team but we’re a great team, too, and we’re going to Columbus,” said Dupree.

Dupree was also tough at the plate with four hits in eight trips.

Kirsten Titus (20-4) got the Game 1 win for the Lady Wolfpack, going the distance allowing five hits with two strikeouts.

The offense got the Lady Wolfpack one run at a time.

In the second inning, a bases-loaded walk to Kirsten McMonigle scored a run.

In the third inning, Brooke Mackelburg’s RBI double scored Dupree,

And in the fourth inning, a Maddie Hunt bunt single to left plated Jordie Holt from second base.

Julie Underwood (9-2) picked up the Game 2 win with three innings of work. Titus came on in relief after Underwood allowed a home run and single to start the fourth inning.

After the Lady Wolfpack stranded 10 in Game 1, Greenbrier catcher Lee Anne Rees’ single drove in two runs in the midst of the Lady Wolfpack’s seven-run fourth inning in Game 2.

Greenbrier’s next game will be Oct. 25 in Columbus, Ga., against the winner of today’s Northgate-Effingham County’s series finale. Northgate won the first game 8-2 while Effingham County won the nightcap 10-9.
