Greenbrier chases Whitewater to reach finals

Greenbrier 15, Whitewater 5

Down 3-0 to the Whitewater Wildcats before taking their first turn at bat, the Greenbrier baseball team didn’t flinch.

They woke up.

The Wolfpack scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning and clubbed its way to a 15-5 mercy-rule win in five innings Tuesday night, advancing to the GHSA Class AAAA state finals.

“As a whole this is by far the best team I’ve been a part of,” senior Spencer Duffie said. “I’m excited for the state. It’s awesome.”

The Wolfpack will travel to Loganville (26-9) on Saturday for a chance to win their first state title since 2007.

The appearance in the title game is the first for fourth-year head coach Chris Wilkins, whose squad is now 30-3. It’s the first time a Wolfpack team has won 30 games since their 2006 state title year when they went 33-1.

Christian Hill got the call to the mound Tuesday and responded like pitchers Jordan Hunt and Austin Robinson have throughout the state playoffs – winning a complete game. The right-hander started the game by allowing a single, a walk and three-run home run, but settled in after that, allowing a total of five runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.

The Wolfpack scored multiple runs in each of the five innings and bludgeoned four Wildcat pitchers for 15 hits.

“We had to score, they’re a good hitting team,” said junior catcher Taylor Glover, who went 2 for 3 with three RBI.

“We came out with our back to the wall and answered the call.”

Solid from the top to bottom of the lineup, all but two Wolfpack batters got a hit and all but one scored. Knox Marchman was perfect in three trips to the plate and drove in two runs. Clint Hardy had three hits in four at-bats.

“This group has done such a good job of answering the bell,” Wilkins said. “It’s like a Rocky Balboa fight. He gets knocked around a little bit but he keeps answering the bell and that’s kind of the way this group has been all year.”

TITLE GAMES

Greenbrier will face Loganville on Saturday for the Georgia Class AAAA state championship. The teams will play a doubleheader and a Game 3 will be played on May 28.
