Greenbrier soccer teams advance past Ware County in Region 2-AAAA tournament

Greenbrier’s girls and boys soccer teams once again proved virtually untouchable during their region tournament openers Tuesday.

Both squads entered the night as the No. 1 seeds in Region 2-AAAA, playing host to the No. 4 seeds from Ware County. The girls jumped out to a quick lead and finished with an 8-0 victory. The boys led by two at the half en route to a 6-1 win.

Both advanced and will be the home team in the second round Friday night. The boys face Richmond Hill while the girls will play the Wayne County-Statesboro winner.

In the boys game, James Toombs got the Wolfpack (15-0-1, 11-0 region) on the board with a goal at the 36:52 mark for a 1-0 lead, but he was far from finished. He scored another goal with 13:30 left in the half, then scored three goals in three minutes in the second half, finishing with five for the night.

“It was a team effort,” said Toombs, a junior. “They fed me the ball and after the first goal they had confidence I could put the ball in the net.”

Reed Norton scored the Wolfpack’s other goal and was credited with an assist. Michael Harris, Taylor Peterson and Luke Waechter also had assists.

At 36:38 of the the first half of the girls contest, Sydney Maileoi chipped a pass to Bay Daniel, who fought off two Lady Gators defenders and blasted the ball past the Ware County goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.

That goal set the tone for the bigger, stronger, faster Lady Wolfpack (15-0-1, 11-0).

Greenbrier led 8-0 at the break, and the second half was shortened to 20 minutes. Lady Wolfpack coach Wes Kendrick kept his starters on the bench the rest of the way. He said his team did not take the Lady Gators for granted entering the match.

“Anyone is beatable on any day,” said Kendrick. “A team can catch a break or we might not show up. We go into every game thinking like that.”

Daniel finished with three goals and two assists, and Madison Campbell added two goals and one assist.

Dani Wright, Nadia Maaouia and Alisa Williams also scored.
