Kevin Hunt hired as Greenbrier's football coach

Greenbrier High School’s defensive line coach got the call to move up to the top job Tuesday when the Columbia County School Board approved his promotion to head football coach.

Kevin Hunt replaces Brian Smith, who stepped down at the end of the 2011 season from the job he had held since 2008.

“It’s been my goal for a long time to be the head coach at Greenbrier,” Hunt said after the board meeting. “I think we have a good core of kids coming back, some kids that are willing to work hard.”

Previously head coach at Cross Creek High, Hunt has served as an assistant coach for the Wolfpack for the past six years.

A graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C., where he played linebacker, Hunt has been a teacher and coach since landing his first job at Butler High School in 1987.

He and his wife, Amy, have four children. Oldest daughter Kayla is a 2010 Greenbrier graduate and scholarship softball player at the University of Alabama; son Jordan is a senior at Greenbrier; daughter Mattie is a Greenbrier freshman; and daughter Lydia is a seventh-grader at Greenbrier Middle School.
