Greenbrier romps past Westside in volleyball

Tuesday night was a homecoming of sorts for the Greenbrier volleyball team.

The Lady Wolfpack last played at home Sept. 12, but still entered with an 11-game win streak and a No. 9 ranking in Class AAAAA.

They wasted little time in taking care of the Class AA Westside Patriots, winning 25-6, 25-10 and 25-16.

“We’ve been so intense for the last month,” said Greenbrier head coach Debbie Born. “It’s good to get home and it’s nice to be home for a while.”

The Lady Wolfpack (29-1) will have four more home games before they jump into the Area 2-AAAAA Tournament.

“We’re all still going strong,” said senior setter Hayley Hughes. “We’re ready for regions.”

For Westside, the game was another chance to get seasoned for its area tournament with another tough non-area opponent.

“Our intent was to schedule a difficult non-region schedule,” said Lady Patriots head coach Brian Hadden. “Columbia County is typically at a higher level than Richmond County.”

Westside and Greenbrier were tied at two in the opening game when the Lady Wolfpack won the next 10 points behind the strong serving of Kenzie Schwartz, who had four aces.

Hughes was also strong with four assists in that span.

Schwartz and Hughes paced Greenbrier with six aces apiece while Hughes had a game-high 14 assists. Jen Purucker and DeJhana Cotton had eight and five kills, respectively.

The Lady Wolfpack won the third game 25-10.

In the third game, the Lady Patriots hung tough for the majority of the contest.

“We tried to fix the mistakes we made in the first and second set,” Hadden said.

With Greenbrier leading 20-16 in the third game, the Lady Wolfpack got a Purucker kill, and two Gabbi Meyering aces, a Lady Patriots hitting error and finally another Purucker kill to end the match.
