Musketeers rally over Wolfpack

Richmond Academy coach Chris Hughes gave his team a choice at halftime.

After they dropped a close game last week to Evans, the Musketeers found themselves in a hole at Greenbrier. Cue Hughes.

"I basically just challenged them," he said. "I felt like we were being embarrassed with the way we were playing."

Richmond Academy quarterback Drek Reid scored two of his three touchdowns after intermission and the Musketeers rallied for a 28-21 win over the Wolfpack on Breast Cancer Awareness Night.

Reid rushed for two touchdowns and recorded 136 of Richmond Academy's 246 yards on the ground. He also completed 5 of 7 passes for 45 yards and a touchdown.

Brandon Althoff leaped high in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown pass from Reid midway through the third quarter to tie the game at 14. Later, Reid gave his team the go-ahead score on a 13-yard run.

With touchdowns on its first two drives of the second half, Richmond Academy (1-1) responded the way Hughes wanted.

"He just said we're going to lay down or we're going to fight," Reid said of the halftime spiel. "We fought."

Quarterback Scott Reeder sparkled at times for Greenbrier (1-1), completing 19 of 27 attempts for 221 yards and three touchdowns. His 40-yard pass to Rhett Stanley down the right sideline late in the first half set up an 8-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Wiebe with seven seconds left before halftime. Greenbrier led 14-7.

But Reeder threw two second-half interceptions, and Richmond Academy capitalized.

Shaquille Williams telegraphed a Reeder pass and gave Richmond Academy possession at the Greenbrier 24 in the third quarter. Four plays later, Reed's scoring run gave the Musketeers the lead.

Richmond Academy seized the momentum, its defense stifling the Wolfpack attack for most of the second half. Greenbrier managed just 66 total yards the final two quarters until its final 77-yard scoring drive in the final two minutes.

By then, the Musketeers were in control. Jamal Smith intercepted a Reeder pass at the Greenbrier 31. Three plays later, Don Quarles took an end around handoff around the left side, kept his balance along the sideline and scored from 18 yards out to push the Richmond Academy lead to 14 with 5:51 remaining.
