North Augusta loses big lead, recovers to beat Greenbrier in baseball

North Augusta 10, Greenbrier 9
North Augusta's Cody Turner rounds the bases after hitting a grand slam during the second inning Friday.

After seeing an eight-run advantage fall by the wayside, North Augusta had to mount a comeback of its own.

Trailing Greenbrier by a run heading into the sixth inning, the Yellow Jackets scored two runs on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice and throwing error, and pulled out a 10-9 win Friday night.

“This is a big thing to build on, to come over here and play this quality team because this team here is one of Georgia’s finest programs and this is big for us,” Yellow Jackets head coach Vic Radcliff Sr. said

The Yellow Jackets
(9-11) started the game with a bang in the first inning. Ryan Hammond and Corbin Lutier singled and Russell Scaggs was safe on a fielder’s choice, setting the stage for cleanup hitter Cody Turner, who drilled a 2-1 pitch from Austin Robinson over the 360 sign in centerfield.

It was a rare bad outing for Robinson, who left with one out in the third inning after allowing eight runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Trailing 8-0 heading into the bottom of the third, the Wolfpack (13-4) scored four times. They added three in the fourth and took a 9-8 lead in the fifth when Adam Grice singled home Chris Michals and Knox Marchman who walked and singled, respectively.

Greenbrier freshman Conner Hogan retired the side in the third and fourth on double plays and turned it over to Adam Sasser, who worked a scoreless fifth. The wheels came off for Sasser in the sixth. He walked the bases loaded before Adam Grice took over on the mound. Grice got a bouncer to the right side, but the throw to first was wild, allowing two runs to score

Chaz Davey (3-2) who went six innings, allowing the 10 runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out two for the Yellow Jackets. Trib Reese worked a perfect seventh for his third save.
