When Lakeside beat Greenbrier in lacrosse on Wednesday night, it was the best of all worlds for the Panthers.
With their hard-fought 13-10 win, the Panthers swept the season series from their rival and clinched a spot in the GHSA Class AAAAA state tournament.
Lakeside (9-4, 4-1 Area 4-AAAAA) could climb as high as a No. 2 seed in the tournament with two wins in the final week of the season.
Junior middie Alex Bowen couldn’t decide which end result was better.
“Both are awesome,” he said. “Put the two together and it’s the best feeling.”
Bowen scored twice and assisted on a Will Hutto goal with 1:34 left to give the Panthers a 12-10 edge. The goal followed a Greenbrier (5-10, 2-4) score just 14 seconds earlier.
Lakeside goalie Jared Broder made 17 saves, and Panthers head coach Ron Ritter liked what he saw from Broder and his defense.
“The defensemen slid well and shut down their attack,” Ritter said. “Jared had a good game in goal.”
Greg Wilson led off the scoring for the Wolfpack, giving them a 1-0 lead a minute and a half into the game. Wilson finished the night leading the Wolfpack with four goals and two assists.
Cody Hovis paced the Panthers with four goals. Bowen was the assist leader with four.
While disappointed with the loss, Wolfpack head coach Jeff Becker was pleased that it was a well-played game.
“When it’s evenly matched, it’s exciting, so it was a fun game,” Becker said.
