Dreher drops Fox Creek

Dreher 20, Fox Creek 0

NORTH AUGUSTA — The game finished, Fox Creek coach Russ Schneider clapped as he made his way toward his offense. Before those players could jog over to the postgame handshake line, the coach wanted to have a quick and positive talk.

The Predators began the season with a 20-0 loss to Dreher, but Schneider didn’t want to see hanging heads, especially considering his Class A program had just played a Class AAA school.

“I told them just how proud I was of them,” Schneider said.

Fox Creek (0-1) twice seriously threatened the Blue Devils defense, only to get stopped at the 2-yard line in the first half and just miss a touchdown pass late in the third quarter.

Fox Creek was also hindered by some bad snap exchanges, which forced quarterback Trey Mock to sacrifice yards for possession. Mock finished with 78 yards passing.

Dreher quarterback Hakim Frazier outgained Fox Creek by himself in the opening half. He found room to the outside for a 32-yard gain on his first run of the game.

The Predators had only 29 offensive yards by halftime, with the snap issues taking away chunks of yards. Frazier wound up rushing for 92 yards and added 87 more yards through the air.

Even with Frazier’s big numbers, Fox Creek stayed close and reached Dreher’s side of the field a few times in the opening half. But after reaching the 3-yard line, Zabian Adams was stopped for only a yard and a fourth-down pass fell incomplete.

The Blue Devils made it 20-0 on a Frazier keeper from 9 yards out.

He was one of three Dreher players to record at least 65 rushing yards.

The Predators’ defense kept it close by forcing three turnovers and making stops – Brandon Gladney made an interception and broke up what would have been a touchdown pass thanks to a big hit – but Fox Creek never reached the end zone.

“It’s the best loss we’ve ever had as a program,” Schneider said, citing the differences in size of the schools and the rosters.

PLAY OF THE GAME: Dreher’s Hakim Frazier showed his big-play ability by taking off for a 32-yard run that set up the Blue Devils’ first score of the game.

STAR OF THE GAME: Frazier had 179 yards of total offense.

WHY DREHER WON: The Blue Devils rushed for 303 yards.

WHY FOX CREEK LOST: The Predators didn’t complete drives when they had periodic offensive success.
