Fox Creek eliminates McCormick

Fox Creek 67, McCormick 61

NORTH AUGUSTA — Fox Creek outscored the McCormick 22-16 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 67-61 victory Friday night and advance in the South Carolina Class A state playoffs.

The fourth-quarter charge was led by senior forward Chris Harmon. After scoring only two points in the first three quarters, Harmon exploded for 11 in the final period.

He said his teammates inspired him to go out and push through a dislocated finger he suffered in Tuesday’s game.

“I just had to stay focused,” Harmon said. “My teammates put a lot of faith in me to go out there and be a leader, so it felt great to go out there and help us get one step closer to our goal.”

McCormick also got a boost from the outside, connecting on eight three pointers in the game.

Sophomore Brandyn Quiller made five of those shots from beyond the arc, and finished with a team-high 17.

He said his confidence returned after missing 14 shots in the team’s last outing.

“That game was really a struggle for me. It was difficult for me to adjust to how far the basket was from the three point line,” Quiller said. “I adjusted to the goal a lot quicker this game and it helped me come out of my slump.”

Marques Sumner paced the Predators early with 10 first quarter points. He finished the game with 16.

He said rebounding down the stretch keyed the victory, scoring was the secondary reason.

“We knew coming in that we had to rebound and create turnovers with a lot of our big men getting hurt,” Sumner said. “We did a solid job in the fourth quarter of boxing out and securing the rebounds that were close to us.

Fox Creek head coach Andre’ Baskett said the game was the opposite of the team’s season. He said he was excited what it means moving forward.

“Our problem all season was that we were getting off to slow starts,” Baskett said. “Today we started better but let the game get away from us in the third quarter. This game shows that we can score anytime we want, but we have to learn to couple that with defense and rebounding if we hope to win it all.”

Fox Creek (20-6) will advance to the third round of the tournament, while McCormick ends its season with a 13-12 record.

The Predators will face the winner of Lewisville and Greenville Tech.
