After falling behind early, Evans could have seen its opponent pack it in and make scoring a difficult assignment for the Knights.
But the Knights didn’t take much time to make such a practice possible.
After trailing early, the Evans boys soccer team scored four unanswered goals to beat Northside (Warner Robins), 4-1, Tuesday evening in a Region 2-AAAAA Tournament game.
With the win, the Knights advanced to the region semifinals and clinched a spot in the state playoffs.
“They really settled in,” Evans coach Brian Killips said.
“The guys responded really well.”
Evans (10-4) was down 1-0 less than seven minutes in but scored two goals in about two minutes to take the lead for good.
With 30:27 to go until halftime, Evans tied the game on a Larry Beauchamp goal. Minutes later, Josh Baker stayed upright long enough despite defensive pressure to beat the keeper.
Playing with the lead, Evans was still the more aggressive side.
After his team hit the crossbar and a post, Jake Shepherd added an insurance goal when he tucked the ball into the left side late in the opening half.
Evans added its final score with 17:33 remaining in the game, as K.C. Douglas headed one home.
Now finally healthy – Killips said it’s the first time in several weeks he’s had a full squad – the Knights press on, knowing they’re in the state tournament.
“If we can work the ball quickly, we can beat everyone,” Killips said.
