North Augusta rolls to wins over Evans

Both North Augusta basketball teams used the same formula to come away with wins against Evans on Tuesday night.

Defensive pressure leading to easy transition baskets led to the Yellow Jacket girls winning 53-36, while the boys took care of business, 69-40.

The North Augusta boys (2-0) took control in the second and third periods, limiting Evans to just six points in each.

“We play hard and and try to run in the first half and good things happen in the second half,” Yellow Jackets head coach Al Young said.

In a game in which 11 players scored for the Yellow Jackets, TJ Sheppard led the way with 14 points, scoring 12 of them in the first period.

North Augusta used second-chance points to spark a 13-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters and broke open a close contest.

Evans (4-2) turned the ball over on three of its first four possessions in the second half and the Yellow Jackets turned those into six quick points to make the lead 44-20.

“We didn’t play hard tonight,” Knights head coach Kevin Kenny said. “We were outplayed, outcoached, out everythinged.”

Kameron Mason led Evans with 10 points.

The Lady Yellow Jackets led just 34-33 at the end of three periods, but outscored the Lady Knghts 19-3 in the fourth quarter to improve to 2-0.

“We were trying to full-court press them and it wasn’t working,” North Augusta coach Crystal Cummings said. “We’re physical in the 2-3, so we got into the 2-3 and it helped.”

Evans (3-2) took the ball down the court several times only to turn it over.

Mallory Stone was the biggest culprit, scoring 11 of her game-high 27 points off five steals that led to layups.

“The last four minutes we kind of fell apart,”Evans head coach Ryan Morningstar said. “They were able to capitalize on our mistakes.”

Arielle Houston chipped in with nine points for the Lady Jackets, sinking two 3-pointers.

Jasmine Stone led the Lady Knights with nine points.
