Evans wins heart-stopper

When Lakeside’s BJ Raymond sliced to the basket for the potential game-winning shot in overtime with three seconds to play, he was quickly surrounded and the Evans Knights came up with a held ball for a turnover and the nail-biting 60-59 win Friday night.

The win gave the Knights a stranglehold on Region 2-AAAAA’s sub-region as they improved to 5-0 and 17-4 overall.

The Knights had a 12-point lead with 4:20 to play in the fourth quarter, but Raymond scored on three consecutive possessions to lead the Panthers’ (7-13, 2-3) comeback that tied the game at 54 with 43 seconds to play.

Knights head coach Kevin Kenny was proud of the way his team battled to the end.

“BJ (Raymond) hit three straight baskets to swing the momentum,” Kenny said. “At the end we did a better job of collapsing on him.”

The Knights got the ball with 43 seconds left in regulation, but the Panthers did a good job of using fouls and the Knights were relegated to a half-court shot at the buzzer.

Damian Foreman scored the last of his 18 points to start overtime, and when Lakeside’s Nick Gilbert scored, the Knights K’Lon Lovett hit a jumper with three minutes to play for a 58-56 lead. The Panthers added three free throws and the Knights a Jacob Buchanan jumper to make the score 60-59.

Lakeside’s Sam Powell led all scorers with 23 points, Luke Harmon added 15 and Raymond chipped in with 11.

With losses in their past two games, Lady Knights coach Ryan Morningstar knew it was important for his team to get a win.

Backed by the duo of Jasmine Stone and Allysha McFarland, the Lady Knights did just that, beating Lakeside 73-63.

Leading 18-14 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Knights (12-7, 4-1 Region 2-AAAAA) quickly broke it open with an 11-4 run to start the second quarter. Stone scored the first nine points on two fastbreak layups, with assists from McFarland, a 3-pointer, a jumper from the middle of the lane and a putback of a McFarland miss.

“We knew we had to come out and play as a team,” said Stone, who led all scorers with 27 points. “It was a key win and it gives us momentum going into Tuesday.”
