With it’s win over Evans on Tuesday night, Greenbrier accomplished the first of its season goals.
The 9-1 win clinched first place in Region 2A-AAAAA, ensuring the Wolfpack’s home-field advantage throughout the region tournament which starts April 19.
The Wolfpack (11-3, 7-1 Region 2A-AAAAA) swept the season series with the three county schools and finish subregion play Friday at Lakeside.
“First place is definitely a big deal, it’s what you want when you start out the season,” said senior Clint Hardy.
By the end of the game, the only question remaining was if Wolfpack starter Austin Robinson would finish the game after having thrown 102 pitches through six innings.
“He asked for the ball, he’s a senior, he wanted the ball and when guys ask for it at this point you trust them and you give it to them,” Wolfpack coach Chris Wilkins said.
Starting the seventh, Robinson walked the first batter, got a strikeout then ended the game starting a double play. He allowed one run while scattering seven singles and struck out five.
The Knights (10-5, 4-4) shot themselves in the foot from the start, committing three errors in the first inning behind starter Garrett Wilkinson (4-1) which helped the Wolfpack score twice. Two more errors in the third led to two more Wolfpack runs.
Greenbrier added a run in the fourth and left no doubt with a four-run sixth with Taylor Glover driving in two with a triple.
Connor Hoover led the Wolfpack with three hits and an RBI. He made the play of the night with two outs in the sixth as he slid and backhanded a grounder headed for left and flipped it to Nick Sandlin for the force.
