Greenbrier sweep draws sub-region titles closer

Taking control of Tuesday night’s soccer game at Evans early in the second half, the Greenbrier Wolfpack put a stranglehold on first place in Region 2A-AAAAA with a 4-2 victory.

Facing a Knights team one loss behind in the standings and needing a win to force a tie for first, the Wolfpack scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half, quickly breaking open a 2-2 contest. The Wolfpack ran their record to 7-0-2, 4-0 in the sub-region with two games to play.

Scott Ball got the eventual game-winner as he blasted one home from 20 yards out at 38:40, then after Evans’ Jake Rizner made a stop on a James Toombs attempt, Michael Montescleros was there for the rebound and his second goal of the night with 30:49 to play.

In the physical, highly contested match, the Knights (5-3, 2-2) took a 1-0 lead on the first of Larry Beauchamp’s two goals 10 minutes into the game.

“It’s not a position we’re in a whole lot,” said Wolfpack coach Chip Wilkins. “I loved the way the guys responded.”

Toombs scored to tie the game and Montescleros scored his first goal before Beauchamp’s low liner knotted the game at two with 5:40 left in the half.

The Lady Wolfpack, meanwhile, strengthened their hold on first place in the subregion with a 4-0 win over the Lady Knights.

Raven Rose missed the Lady Wolfpack’s last three games in which they went 0-1-2. She was back in full force Tuesday night as she scored a goal and assisted on the rest as the Lady Wolfpack improved to 4-2-2, 4-0 Region 2-AAAAA. Evans is 3-4, 1-3.
