Greenbrier volleyball team takes tri-match

In a tri-match involving young Columbia County volleyball squads, the Greenbrier High School Lady Wolfpack came out on top Thursday night.

At Greenbrier, the Lady Wolfpack improved to 3-0 on the year with a 25-17, 25-14 win over Grovetown, then beat Evans 25-14, 25-17. Grovetown earned a split on the night with a 12-25, 25-21, 25-21 win over the Lady Knights.

The Lady Wolfpack got the standout efforts they needed from their three returners. For the night, DeJhana Cotton and Gabbi Meyering totaled 13 and 10 kills, respectively, while setter Lauren Ingalls finished with 19 assists.

“We’re trying to feed those two, they’re our main hitters so we’re trying to get them the ball,” said Lady Wolfpack head coach Debbie Born.

The Lady Wolfpack started slowly in their matches, but pulled away midway through both.

“We’ve got to put the gas pedal on from the get-go,” Born said. “We can’t wait to get started or it’s going to bite us eventually. I’m happy we’re 3-0, but for us we still have a lot of work to do.”

After falling to Greenbrier, Grovetown, also with just three returners, evened it’s record on its season-opening night.

“I don’t care about the loss, but I wasn’t excited about the way we performed against Greenbrier, but I’m so glad we stepped it up and played better against Evans,” said Lady Warriors head coach Amy Slagle.

In the game of the night, Grovetown and Evans (0-3) split the first two games, forcing a decisive third. The Lady Warriors jumped out to a 9-1 lead behind four aces from Jessica Threatt, but the Lady Knights stormed back, taking their first lead of the night at 19-18.

Tiara Ramey stepped to the service line with the Lady Warriors leading 20-19, recorded three aces of her own and the Lady Warriors held on for the 25-21 final.

“When we finally did get going it was almost a little too late at that point.” Lady Knights first-year coach Lauren Farr said. “We’re a young team so I’m predicting as the season goes on we’ll get better.”
