Crusaders breeze to victory

Curtis Baptist 52, Fullington 7

PLAY OF THE GAME: A pair of runs by junior Deavell McClendon during a third- quarter drive epitomized the tough running of the Crusaders. The burly fullback appeared to be stopped behind the line on both runs, yet he fought through numerous tackle attempts both times and gained 9 and 29 yards, respectively, He finished the drive with a 1-yard score.

STAR OF THE GAME: Trey Reid ran all over the Trojans defense. The senior scored three touchdowns (9, 53 and 72 yards) while finishing with 196 rushing yards on just 10 carries.

WHY CURTIS BAPTIST WON: The Crusaders dominated every phase of the game. They totaled 453 yards to the Trojans’ 114 and weren’t forced into a punting situation all night. Even a potential bad break – a bad snap on a point-after attempt – turned into a successful two-point pass.

WHY FULLINGTON LOST: Though the Trojans got on the board late, they were simply overmatched from the start.

QUOTABLE: “As a coach, to win and still know that you are nowhere near your peak yet is a good thing. We’re going to have to figure it out fast because we’ve got Frederica (Academy) more than likely coming next week, the defending state champions. They’re used to playing in games like this, and this is our first taste of it.” – Curtis Baptist head coach Nathan Duffie on the first state playoff victory in program history and the challenge of next week’s game.

NEXT: Curtis Baptist (10-2) vs. winner of Frederica Academy/David Emanuel in the second round of the GISA Class A playoffs.
