Aquinas Ahmed Hill expects to contribute when he gets to Marquette

Aquinas guard Ahmed Hill picked Marquette over several other schools Saturday. He said the coaching staff made him feel like family.

New Marquette commit Ahmed Hill doesn’t expect to be tied to the bench when he gets there.

Instead, the Aquinas basketball star sees points and playing time from the start.

“Their style of play fits – they get out and go and shoot the ball,” Hill said. “I know I can come in and be an impact player right away. They’re trying to build around me, be the centerpiece. They want me to come in and be a scorer and leader for them.”

Hill committed to Marquette on Saturday after he visited the school with his mother, Donna. While on the trip, Hill said he got to meet Golden Eagles players and watched the school’s Marquette Madness. The Friday night event included a team scrimmage as the fans got to see the 2013-14 squad.

“They don’t have football, so everything is based on basketball,” Hill said. “They lined up for Madness, with kids lined up and screaming, ‘We want Med!’ ”

Not only was Marquette’s status as a basketball school an important trait for Hill, but it is also part of the Big East Conference.

The Aquinas senior also said the Golden Eagles had been recruiting him for three years, calling it a relationship. He and his mother formed a bond with head coach Buzz Williams and assistant Isaac Chew. When Hill asked his mother what she thought about Marquette when they were visiting, Hill said his mother replied that she loved it there and felt like family.

When Hill told Williams he was going to come to Marquette, Hill said the coach had a big grin and hugged him.

Hill, who led the Irish to the Georgia High School Association Class A private state semifinals as a junior, still has one more high school season to go before leaving for Milwaukee.

“Now that the recruiting process is over, I can focus on grades and give Aquinas a state championship before I leave,” Hill said.
