Shawn Moore wanted to play college basketball close to home. He got his wish on Wednesday.
Moore, The Augusta Chronicle’s South Carolina Boys Basketball Player of the Year, signed to play with Paine College. Now, his mom, dad, three older siblings and other family and friends can watch him play in person.
Moore, who averaged 23.8 points a game this past season, totaled 996 points in two years at Aiken High. He joins a Lions squad that went 14-15 during the 2012-13 season.
“When I went up there up for the visit I saw they had a good program,” Moore said. “I like staying close to home.”
Paine gets a versatile player who swished 72 3-pointers during his senior season. He also posted 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals a game.
“Outstanding player. He’s a kid who can definitely score. Tremendous range,” Aiken coach Tony Harrell said.
“He’s a great athlete. He’s a solid on-ball defender. A lot of people really don’t see that part of his game.”
Moore played for the Aiken junior varsity team in 10th grade. He then showed his scoring progress playing two years of varsity.
“His best days,” Harrell said, “are definitely ahead of him.”
