Rebels down Bulldogs for second win

Hephzibah 18, Butler 15

PLAY OF THE GAME: Despite making only his third-career start, Hephzibah quarterback Stephon Washington extended his team’s lead to 12-0 when he connected with Ke’Oddis Stokes on a 44-yard TD pass. The score came with 4:17 left in the first quarter and helped propel the Rebels to their second victory of the season.

STAR OF THE GAME: Hephzibah running back Wallace Curtis. Curtis scored the go-ahead touchdown, while rushing for a game-high 98 yards. His longest run was 64 yards, which set up the Rebels’ first TD.

WHY HEPHZIBAH WON: After having its lead trimmed to 12-7 in the second quarter, the defense preserved the win by holding Butler to only eight points over the final 34-minutes of regulation.

Leading the way for the Rebels’ defense were Tommy GriffinJamorris GreshamEric Norris and Cam Danner.

WHY BUTLER LOST: The Bulldogs were able to move the ball on Hephzibah’s defense, but turnovers and fumbles ultimately proved too costly to overcome. In all, Butler lost three fumbles, each of which halted promising drives.

QUOTABLE: “This was a much-needed win for us,” Hephzibah head coach John Bowen said. “Before the game, I felt like we were two pretty even teams, but fortunately we were able to make just enough plays to pull off the victory. Overall, our offense started the game on fire, but tonight’s credit needs to go to our defense. Our D-line was in their backfield all night.”
