Fox Creek expects to have Marty Williams back for second round

Despite suffering a neck injury Friday night, Fox Creek’s Marty Williams should be OK to play in the second round of the Class A Division II state playoffs against Christ Church.

The quarterback/defensive back suffered a neck sprain, Predators coach Russell Schneider said, when Williams came up as a free safety and “made a collision” with a Southside Christian player. The opposing player limped off the field, but Williams stayed down.

Williams, a Clemson commitment, had more than 300 yards of offense prior to the injury, which resulted in an “eerie quiet” at the stadium, Schneider said, as the specifics of the injury weren’t known until Williams was taken to the hospital.

“He’s doing good,” Schneider said. “They think he’ll be OK to play next week. Any time anybody (gets hurt), it can put things in perspective.”

BULLDOG PRIDE: Butler soaked in its 34-14 win over Richmond Academy, knowing it qualified for postseason play for the first time since 2003.

The Bulldogs grabbed Region 3-AAA’s No. 4 seed and will play two-time defending state champion Sandy Creek in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs Friday. The Fighting Patriots, of Tyrone, Ga., own a 39-game winning streak, not that it matters to Butler.

“How high these kids are flying right now, we could play the Atlanta Falcons next week,” Bulldogs coach Ashley Harden said, “I don’t know if I’m going to be able to coach them. They’re going to be bouncing off the walls. It’s been a fun ride these past two years. We’re going to take it as far as we can take it.”

PLAYOFF BERTHS: The GHSA state playoff brackets were almost finalized after Friday night’s games, with Aquinas and Laney the only Augusta schools playing at home in the first round.

Burke County and Lincoln County are the only schools with No. 1 seeds after both clinched a region championship Friday night.

Local teams in the playoffs are:

• Class A: Aquinas, Lincoln County, Washington-Wilkes

• Class AA: Laney, Jefferson County

• Class AAA: Burke County, Butler, Thomson, Washington County

• Class AAAA: Lakeside
