PLAY OF THE GAME: With 9:01 remaining in the second quarter, Burke County senior Donquell Green extended his team’s advantage to 13-0 when he found the end zone on an 18-yard quarterback keeper. With the win, Burke County advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class AAAA state playoffs.

STAR OF THE GAME: Green. He rushed 21 times for a game-high 114 yards and a touchdown. Green also went 3 for 3 passing for 49 yards.

WHY BURKE COUNTY WON: After being held scoreless in the opening quarter, the Bears scored twice in the second to take a 13-0 halftime lead. Reginald Grubbs and Green accounted for the TDs.

WHY MARY PERSONS LOST: It struggled to contain Burke County’s rushing attack, which totaled 288 yards on 56 carries. In all, five Burke County backs finished with at least 25 rushing yards.

QUOTABLE: “You have to be able to play defense at this point in the season and we did an outstanding job of getting a shutout tonight. As for our offense, we were able to grind it out and finish just enough drives. Even though we have a marquee player in Donquell Green, a bunch of our backs came through and made some big-time plays in key situations.” – Burke County coach Eric Parker.
