Students and faculty got a chance to celebrate Burke County’s first state football championship Monday in an impromptu ceremony at the high school.
The team made program history Saturday when it defeated Peach County 28-14 at the Georgia Dome in the Class AAA final.
The Bears used a dominating rushing attack led by Donquell Green and a strong defense to score the final 28 points in the game.
With the win, coach Eric Parker became just the sixth man to earn a GHSA state title as a player and a coach. Parker won as a player at Mitchell-Baker in 1983.
Burke County ended the year 14-1, winning the Region 3-AAA crown and its final 12 games of the season.
