Lincoln County used offensive balance in home playoff win

As Ben Turner found Zireycus Letman near the sideline again and again, it became obvious that the passing game wasn’t going to be quiet.

In Lincoln County’s 28-22 win against Wilkinson County in a Class A public state playoffs quarterfinal, the Red Devils needed their passing attack to succeed against a defense determined to stop the running game.

Back on Nov. 2 in their first meeting, Turner completed only seven passes for 74 yards. But on the first drive of Friday’s game, Turner had three completions for 41 yards and a touchdown.

Turner ended the game with 232 passing yards to provide balance with Mike McIntire’s 100-plus rushing yards.

“We knew we had to do that,” Red Devils coach Larry Campbell said about the passing game. “They put eight in the box.”

NO REPEAT: Burke County had another successful season, but this one won’t end with a state crown.

After winning the 2011 Class AAA state title, the Bears fell short in the Class AAAA quarterfinals this season with a 31-20 loss to Sandy Creek.

Not surprisingly, Burke County quarterback Donquell Green was asked to lead, and he finished with more than 100 yards on the ground and through the air, accounting for three touchdowns.

Green ended his junior year with more than 3,000 offensive yards.

TOUGH WAY TO GO: Region 3-AAA members Thomson and Washington County both went out in the Class AAA state quarterfinals, but combined to finish 23-3 this year.

In Thomson’s eight-point loss to Cartersville, the Bulldogs played in their seventh game of the year that was decided by 10 points or fewer. Unfortunately, this was Thomson’s first loss in such a game.

As for Washington County, it had another big offensive game, but they also struggled with turnovers and lost 40-35. Washington County scored at least 35 points in a game nine times this season.

RUSHING: Melvin Hill, Washington County, 216 yards in 40-35 loss to St. Pius X.

PASSING: Ben Turner, Lincoln County, 232 yards in 28-22 win over Wilkinson County.

RECEIVING: Jalen Franklin, Lincoln County, 114 yards in 28-22 win over Wilkinson County.
