Augusta Christian's Motes posting big lines

Augusta Christian girls basketball player Anna Motes is the player of the week.

Anna Motes the scorer is now Anna Motes, scorer-plus.

With some important players gone from the previous team, Motes has been doing a little bit of everything this season. Though she was a double-digit scorer who also stuffed the stat book a season ago, Motes is putting up even more impressive lines this campaign.

So far this season, she is averaging 15.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.2 steals and 4.2 assists per game – all improved numbers from her sophomore run. But Motes has been even more elite lately, combining for 46 points, 14 rebounds, 12 steals and nine assists in wins this past Saturday and Tuesday. For her big week, Motes is The Augusta Chronicle’s Player of the Week.

But she still isn’t satisfied with her play.

“I just want to get better. I want to be able to make my teammates better,” she said.

Motes has taken on a bigger role this season, and she’s led on the court.

She can drive to the rim or stretch out the defense from farther out offensively, but she’ll also take away passes as Augusta Christian runs its zone defense.

Those are the plays where Motes and her teammates are most dangerous.

“I like to play good defense because it leads to good offense,” Motes said. “We’ve been reading teams’ passes, which has led to steals.”
