Augusta Prep making final regular season push

When Augusta Christian played host to Augusta Prep on Tuesday night, the volleyball teams continued heading in different directions.

The Lady Cavaliers won handily, 25-9, 25-7, 25-15. The loss dropped the Lady Lions to 0-16 with one match left.

“We don’t have the depth in numbers or experience this year,” said Lady Lions coach Chuck Renfro, whose squad has only two seniors. “It’s been tough for that reason.”

Augusta Prep, meanwhile, improved to 15-5 with three regular season matches left until they play host to the Georgia Independent Schools Association state tournament on Oct. 26-27. They finished Region 1-AAA play 8-0, and will be a No. 1 seed. Two of their next three matches will be against South Aiken and Fox Creek.

“The most important thing we can do is play well,” said Lady Cavaliers coach Rich Bland. “It’s important we play the highest caliber teams we can so when we go into states we have that experience.”

Lady Cavaliers sophomore Brooke Stevens recorded seven aces while the team won the first nine points. They finished with 12 aces in the game. Stevens also had two kills for the game and nine for the match.

Lady Cavaliers sophomore setter Hannah Masiongale had two
kills while recording 21 assists.

Game 2 started much the same as the first as Shelby Hamilton had four aces as the Lady Cavaliers built a quick 7-1 advantage.

In the final game, the Lady Lions were down 5-0 and trailed 16-5 before closing to within 17-12 on a Sara Tereshinski ace. That would be as close as they would get after a Rachael Muehlfeld kill and two Hamilton aces quickly pushed the Lady Cavaliers’ lead to 20-12.
