Augusta Christian takes out Augusta Prep in first meeting

Augusta Christian 42 , Augusta Prep 20

In the first meeting between the two schools, Augusta Christian took the early series lead over Augusta Prep on Friday night.

The Lions came out strong in the second half, dominating the line of scrimmage and ran their way to the 42-20 win.

By game's end, the Lions had rushed 42 times for 380 yards and five touchdowns.

Coach Keith Walton wants the team to be known for being tough up front and thought the Lions did that against the Cavaliers. They trailed 8-7 at halftime and made adjustments at the break.

“We just told them keep pounding them inside and it will break and it did,” Walton said.

Opening the second half, Augusta Christian running back John Freeman ripped off gains of 16, 16, 15 and scored on a 14-yarder to give the Lions a 15-8 lead they would not relinquish.

After the Cavaliers turned the ball over on downs on their next possession, E’Mon Reeves rumbled 44 yards for a score as the Lions stretched the lead to 22-8.

Reeves led all rushers with 202 yards on 11 carries while Freeman had 12 carries for 112 yards and two touchdowns.

The Cavaliers could muster just four first downs the entire night and lost five fumbles but came away with some big plays.

Joseph Shaver picked off a pass and ran it back 46 yards for a score, giving the Cavaliers an 8-7 lead. Jimmy St. Louis hit Shaver for a 54-yard touchdown off a fake punt and Brendan Alee returned a fumble 65 yards for a touchdown.

Down two scores, the Cavaliers recovered a fumble at the Lions' 31 at the end of the third quarter. After gaining a first down, they fumbled the ball right back to the Lions and any hope of a turnaround was gone when the Lions used five plays to score.

“I’m proud of these guys,” said Cavaliers’ head coach Harry Bacheller. “We’re young but we played with a lot of heart and effort.”
