Aquinas' Garnett is player of the week

Running back Ruben Garnett, of Aquinas, had 164 yards and two touchdowns in the Irish's 19-16 overtime win over George Walton last week.

Ruben Garnett already had a career-high game by the time his team trotted out onto the field for overtime. But he and his coaches knew he wasn’t done yet.

The junior running back finished with 29 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning score, as Aquinas beat George Walton Academy, 19-16, in overtime. Garnett’s big game made him the Player of the Week.

“We knew he was capable,” Irish coach James Leonard said about the workload. “He busted his butt this summer to get his body prepared for what he was going to have to do this year. We know that we can count on him to carry the ball that many times if we need him to.”

Though other players have picked up yards, Garnett has been the leader on the ground during the 2-0 start. He has 44 attempts for 273 rushing yards going into Aquinas’ next game against Josey on Sept. 20.

But even with the increased role, Garnett remains strong deep into games.

“The running we do in practice really keeps me up,” Garnett said. “I really wasn’t that tired. Them hitting me, that kind of wore me down a little bit, but I just got to push through it.”
