Georgia 24, South Carolina 10

Lakeside’s Hunter Banks and Aquinas’ Chris Lambert met and practiced for the first time together in preparation for the Border Bowl, but an immediate connection led to positive results for their Georgia team.

Banks and Lambert connected for two touchdowns to lead Georgia in its 24-10 win over South Carolina on Sunday in the inaugural All-Star game at Lucy C. Laney Memorial Stadium.

Lambert capped a state championship season with Aquinas and his prep career by catching five passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns, earning Georgia’s offensive player of the game.

Both scores were thrown by Banks, who developed a quick chemistry with Lambert.

“We noticed the coverage early, and I said I didn’t think the linebackers could run with me,” Lambert said. “Hunter made some perfect throws.”

The win summed up a perfect season for Lambert after going undefeated and winning a Class A Private State Championship at Aquinas. He caught three passes for 39 yards in the championship win over Calvary Day on Dec. 13 at the Georgia

“It’s been a good senior season,” he said. “This is definitely a good way to end my high school career.”

Banks went 8 for 16 for 153 yards and two touchdowns to lead Georgia. The Lakeside quarterback commanded the team for much of the game, helping them jump to an early lead they could

“We knew the coverage and I trusted (Lambert),” Banks said. “He’s a smart football player. When I threw the ball up, he would come down with it.”

The first score between Banks and Lambert was a 22-yard connection that came with 4:16 left in the first quarter. Georgia coach Jarrett Troxler, who coached Banks at Lakeside, went back to the well before halftime on a 17-yard touchdown pass between the two with 54 seconds left.

“Lambert did a great job completing assignments,” Troxler said. “He stayed sharp throughout the game. Banks is just a good quarterback. Some people don’t realize how good he is. He did a good job today, and I’m proud of them.”
