While Burke County and Thomson are playing for home field in the early rounds of the Class AAA state playoffs, four other Region 3-AAA schools just want to make it in.
The Bears and Bulldogs are meeting for the region title for the second year in a row. Burke County won 27-9 at home a year ago.
Richmond Academy and Washington County could make up the other two playoff spots again, as the Musketeers routed Hephzibah and the Golden Hawks beat Grovetown, 48-23, in 2010. Washington County and Grovetown play again this year for a state playoff appearance.
As for Richmond Academy, it takes its four-game winning streak into a home game against Butler.
“We think we match up pretty well with them,” Musketeers coach Chris Hughes said. “They got athletes. We got athletes. They’re weak in some spots here and there, maybe special teams and some other spots, that we feel like we can take advantage of. But it’s going to be a war.”
WIN AND IT’S IN: As Lakeside finished off its 17-0 win over Evans on Friday night, Panthers coach Jarrett Troxler said it wouldn’t be long before his team turned its full focus to its most important game of the season.
Lakeside, the No. 2 seed out of Region 2-AAAA North, will take on South No. 3 Brunswick on Friday night in the region play-in game with a state playoff berth on the line.
“We’re going to enjoy this for about two hours, then start getting ready for Brunswick,” Troxler said after the Evans win.
Brunswick coaches were on hand for Friday’s home game to trade film with Lakeside’s coaching staff.
