Before the season, Aiken volleyball coach Malynda Young knew her team had the makings of a state championship contender.
More than halfway through the season, all signs seem to be pointing in that direction.
The Lady Hornets are undefeated and coming off a pair of huge region wins over Lexington, the only team to defeat Aiken in the regular season a year ago, and North Augusta. An early-season tie against Blythewood is the only game the Lady Hornets (16-0-1) have not won.
Only four of Aiken's wins have not been shutouts. That dominance has elevated Aiken to No. 1 in the state for the first time.
Among their many standout players is McKenna Dyer , who in two games this past week totaled 34 assists, nine digs and six kills.
STILL ON TOP: Lakeside's girls cross country team still sits atop the Georgia Class AAAA cross country polls.
The Lady Panthers remained No. 1 in the coaches poll and second in the overall rankings.
COOLING OFF: After a tremendous start, Screven County softball has tailed off somewhat as the season winds down.
The Lady Gamecocks, who at one point were 15-0, have dropped six of their past 11 games, including a 1-4 showing at the Coke Classic at Patriots Park.
The good news for Screven County, however, is that none of those losses were in region, where it holds a 7-0 mark.
GOOD AIM: Six local JROTC students, four from Westside and two from Cross Creek, are in the top 100 of the Sporter Air Rifle Shooters national rankings.
Victoria Mixon (58th) and LaToni Smith (82nd) represent Cross Creek. D'Warren Daniels (59th), Markesha McKay (60th), Elijah Baker (76th) and Darrell Deas (95th) shoot for Westside.
