Greenbrier scratches out baseball win over Grovetown

GREENBRIER 4, GROVETOWN 3
Greenbrier shortstop Hunter Boose was congratulated by Spencer Duffie after scoring the first run against Grovetown on Wednesday night.

The game Greenbrier and Grovetown played Wednesday night was far different from the one they played last week.

Days after winning by 12 runs, Greenbrier had to work harder to scratch out a 4-3 victory Wednesday.

The Wolfpack (3-0) scored single runs in the first and third innings off Grovetown starter Garrett Haskins (0-2). Each time, the leadoff batter reached base, was sacrificed to second and ultimately came around to score.

Greenbrier starter Adam Sasser gave up hits in each of the first three innings but escaped unscathed each time.

The fourth inning was a different story. Ryan Beasley doubled to start the inning for the Warriors (2-3), and Phillip Dukes walked one out later. Beasley and Dukes scored on a single by Cody McAllister and an RBI groundout by Mitch Davis, respectively.

A double by Michael Cornett scored McAllister to give Grovetown its first lead.

Sasser gave up three runs on six hits while striking out two before Wolfpack coach Chris Wilkins called on reliever Adam Grice.

Grice got the final out of the fourth inning and didn’t allow a hit the rest of the way to get his first win of the season.

“I thought he did a fantastic job,” Wilkins said of his right-handed
submarine-style pitcher.

“You don’t see too many pitches coming from that angle.”

The Wolfpack immediately responded to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Haskins walked Rhett Stanley and Tyler Fournier, and they scored when Taylor Glover’s drive to the 380-mark in center field ticked off Cornett’s glove.

“I was seeing the ball good tonight,” said Glover, who went 2 for 2 with three RBI.

Haskins was hit-or-miss, striking out 10 and walking five.

“This was a good win,” Wilkins said. “With that team and Haskins on the mound, they’re going to be tough to beat.”
