North Augusta's Scott Brown shoots 61, vaults to third at John Deere Classic

Scott Brown's 61 on Saturday matched the low round of the year on the PGA Tour.

SILVIS, Ill. — North Augusta’s Scott Brown shot 10-under-par 61, which matched the lowest PGA Tour round of 2014, to move into third place Saturday after three rounds of the John Deere Classic.

Brown trails leader Brian Harman, an exGeorgia standout, by two shots at TPC Deere Run. Harman had two eagles in a 65 that gave him a one-stroke lead over three-time winner Steve Stricker. Harman is at 17-under 196 heading into the final round.

Brown’s 61 came after what he called a “bad 1-under” 70 on Friday.

“I was just trying to get back into the golf tournament, and it turned into a great round,” said Brown, who won the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open in 2013. That was played opposite a World Golf Championship event, so Brown didn’t qualify for the Masters Tournament. With a win today, he would earn his first invite to Augusta National.

“I’m going to have to go shoot another low one,” Brown said.

On a day when players were allowed to clean their ball in the fairway because of an early morning downpour, Brown flirted with 59, but had to settle for birdie on the par-5 17th after reaching the green in two shots, and then parred the par-4 18th.

Stricker shot 64. He had his streak of bogey-free holes end at 24 with a 5 at the par-4 11th, but rallied for birdies on the last two holes.

EUROPEAN TOUR: In Aberdeen, Scotland, Justin Rose set up a chance to capture back-to-back titles by shooting 5-under-par 66 at the Scottish Open to move into a share of the lead with Marc Warren (67) after three rounds.

WEB.COM TOUR: In Sandy, Utah, Andres Gonzales doubled his lead in the Utah Championship after shooting 6-under-par 65. He’s now four shots in front of Aaron Goldberg (64). Gonzales is at 19-under 194.

Evans resident Vaughn Taylor shot 70 and is at 205. Augusta’s Scott Parel had 71 and is at 206.
