Greg Owen leads Tour Finals event



DAVIDSON, N.C. — England’s Greg Owen shot 6-under-par 66 on Friday to take the second-round lead in the Chiquita Classic, the second tournament in the four event Tour Finals series.

The 41-year-old Owen, the winner of the European Tour’s 2003 British Masters, is at 8-under 136. He had an eagle, seven birdies and three bogeys.

Camilo Benedetti is a stroke back along with Kris Blanks, Andrew Svoboda and Will MacKenzie.

Benedetti and Blanks shot 67, Svoboda had 65, and MacKenzie 68.

Evans resident Vaughn Taylor was the only area player to make the cut, which fell at 144. The former Augusta State golfer is tied for ninth place, three shots off the lead, after 66 on Friday.

Missing the cut were Will Clax­ton (73 on Friday for 146), Scott Parel (75 for 147), Henrik Norlander (74 for 149) and Kevin Kisner (73 for 155).

The bulk of the field is made up of players in the top 75 on the Tour money list and Nos. 126-200 in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup standings. The top 25 on the money list – which included Kisner – are assured PGA Tour cards, while the other players are fighting for 25 additional cards. This is the second of four tournaments.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: In Sainte-Julie, Quebec, Dick Mast took the first-round lead in the Montreal Championship, shooting 3-under-par 69 on La Vallee du Richelieu’s difficult Rouville Course.

The 62-year-old Mast, winless on the 50-and-over tour, had five birdies and two bogeys.

Kenny Perry, the Senior Players Championship and U.S. Senior Open winner in consecutive tour starts this summer, opened with 70 on the tree-lined layout. Bernhard Langer is another stroke back along with Mark Brooks, Mike Reid, Tom Pernice Jr. and David Frost.


EUROPEAN TOUR: In Crans-Sur-Sierre, Switzerland, Stephen Gallacher shot 6-under-par 65 for a share of the lead with Thomas Bjorn after the second round of the European Masters.

Bjorn, the 2011 champion, shot his second consecutive 66 to match Gallacher at 10-under 132.

Thirteen-year-old Ye Wo-cheng missed the cut with rounds of 78 and 76.
