WICHITA, Kan. – For the first time in 161 starts on the Web.com, Augusta’s Scott Parel walked away a winner.
Parel shot 7-under-par 64 in the final round today to claim the Air Capital Classic in Wichita, Kan. Parel finished the tournament with an 18-under-par total to defeat the field by three shots at Crestview Country Club.
The 48-year-old Parel opened with rounds of 69-66-67 to give him a one-shot lead after 54 holes. In the final round, he was 3-under when he put the tournament away on a three-hole stretch on the back nine. After posting birdie at No. 13, he eagled the par-5 14th before adding another birdie at No. 15.
Parel, an Aquinas High School graduate, entered the tournament ranked No. 153 on the Web.com money list, with seven missed cuts in 10 events this year because of a back ailment – an MRI in March in Augusta revealed a bulging L5-S1 disc pressing against his sciatic nerve. His best previous finish was a tie for 34th place two weeks ago in the Mid-Atlantic Championship.
Parel’s previous best career finish came last June when he lost in a playoff in the Web.com’s Rex Hospital Open. With his victory, he climbed to No. 14 on the money list. The top 25 at the end of the Web.com regular season, Aug. 25, will receive their PGA Tour cards for the 2013-14 season.
