Healthy Hal Sutton leads Champions Tour event

SAUCIER, Miss — Hal Sutton has a new left hip and that’s helping him get back to his old swing.

The result is the 54-year-old’s best golf in more than a decade.

Sutton shot 3-under-par 69 on Friday in the first round of the Champions Tour’s Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic for a share of the lead with Steve Elkington, Corey Pavin and Roger Chapman.

Augusta native and 1987 Masters Tournament champion Larry Mize opened with 73. Former Augustan Allen Doyle had 83.

Sutton won 14 times on the PGA Tour but didn’t play for about five years before becoming eligible for the Champions Tour in 2009. He hasn’t had much success over the past few years – mostly because his painful hip made it difficult to maintain a consistent swing.

WEB.COM TOUR: In Broussard, La., Darren Stiles shot 7-under-par 64 to take the Louisiana Open lead.

Stilles, who is at 11-under 131, leads Arjun Atwall (65) by a shot.

Two shots back are Troy Merritt (66), Jason Gore (65) and Ben Martin (67).

Aiken’s Kevin Kisner (68-72) and Augusta’s Scott Parel (71-69) made the cut on the number. Aiken native Matt Hendrix shot 74-74.

LPGA TOUR: In Carlsbad, Calif., Beatriz Recari played her second consecutive bogey-free round and leads the Kia Classic.

Recari shot 5-under-par 67 and is one shot ahead of Paula Creamer (68 on Friday) and Karrie Webb (70).

Recari has had eight birdies and 28 pars in two rounds

Stacy Lewis, in her first tournament as the No. 1-ranked player in the world, had her second consecutive 70 and is tied for 10th place, four shots off the lead.

EUROPEAN TOUR: In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 2011 Masters Tournament champion Charl Schwartzel and Wu Ashun have the clubhouse lead in the Malaysian Open after the second round was suspended because of darkness.

Schwartzel and Wu shot 4-under-par 68s to finish 9-under overall in the event that is sanctioned by European and Asian tours.
