Love one back of Atwal in The McGladrey Classic

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — Davis Love III found the perfect tonic for any Ryder Cup hangover – playing golf, and playing well on a Sea Island course he knows better than anyone.

Love, who lives in nearby Sea Island, Ga., got himself into the final group at the McGladrey Classic on Friday with 4-under-par 66 to trail Arjun Atwal by one shot.

Atwal, who only has two tournaments left in a last-ditch effort to keep his card, had 63 to take the lead going into the weekend.

Only the top 125 on the money list keep their cards; Atwal is 175th.

Atwal is at 10-under 130, with plenty of familiar names right behind him. Jim Furyk, in his final official event of the year, had 65 and is tied with Love.

Love, the Ryder Cup captain who saw his team blow a 10-6 final-day lead and lose to Europe, was eager to get back to golf after the Ryder Cup.

EUROPEAN TOUR: In Perth, Australia, 20-year-old rookie Emiliano Grillo moved closer to his first professional title by shooting 5-under-par 67 for a four-stroke lead after the second round of the Perth International.

Bo Van Pelt (67 on Friday) and Jason Scrivener (69) are tied for second.

Former Augusta State golfers Scott Jamieson (72-71–143) and Oliver Wilson (73-73–146) made the cut.

LPGA TOUR: In Incheon, South Korea, Suzann Pettersen shot a course-record 9-under-par 63 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the HanaBank Championship.

Karin Sjodin is in second place with five players tied for third, two shots back.

WEB.COM TOUR: In Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., veteran B.J. Staten shot 4-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead over a host of players at the halfway mark of the Jacksonville Open at Dye’s Valley Course.

The 35-year-old Staten is at 6-under 134 through 36 holes.

The golfers tied for second place are Ben Whittaker (66 on Friday), Glen Day (66), Patrick Cantlay (67), James Nitties (68) and Doug LaBelle II (70).

Augusta’s Scott Parel had 72 and is at 140. Aiken native Matt Hendrix had 73 and is at 141. He made the cut by a shot.
